Tooth Extraction

As dentists, our objective is to always save your natural tooth where possible, through fillings, root canal treatments or crowns.

Unfortunately, in some circumstances this is just not possible. Whether your tooth has experienced trauma in an accident, tooth decay and gum disease have destroyed your teeth integrity, or overcrowding is pushing your teeth out of alignment, our expert Dental101 dentists will determine if tooth extraction is the best course of action for you. Not only will you be pain free post procedure, but your overall oral health benefits by not housing a dying, diseased or impacted tooth.

We see many clients enter the Practice quite nervous and reluctant to undergo a tooth extraction – and we understand why. Visions of rough teeth pulling and tugging certainly don’t conjure up a relaxing scene.

However, we strive to make the tooth extraction process as pain free and fast as possible and always keep our patients’ comfort in the forefront. Early detection is key to an easier tooth removal treatment, so don’t put up with the pain any longer. Infection, swelling and pain can onset quickly with a dying tooth. Since easier tooth extractions are more affordable than dealing with complications down the track, let Dental101 sort the problem today.

Get to know the procedure

Knowing what the tooth extraction procedure actually involves can help alleviate undue stress or anxiety – and our dentists will always be happy to answer any concerns you may have.

  • Our dentist will identify, either visually or through an x-ray, a tooth that is no longer viable. If there are any foreseen complications, they will be fully discussed during this time.
  • So you don’t experience any pain, a local anesthetic will be used to numb your mouth. We can discuss sedation too if preferred.
  • The dentist will then remove the tooth from its socket and clear the socket as fast as practicable.

Post Extraction Care

You may experience some discomfort post-procedure as the tooth socket heals. This is normal and will die down shortly. The anesthetic will take several hours to wear off, so take care around hot beverages. Take any prescribed medications to help reduce any soreness and avoid touching the site with your tongue, finger or straw. Rinsing with warm salt water after 24 hours is advised. Resume normal brushing over the site after 3 days.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth, otherwise known as your third molars, are located right at the back of your jaw – you have four in total. Since they are usually the very last teeth to erupt, which can happen as late as your 20s, the term ‘wisdom teeth’ was adopted to highlight that you’ve reached maturity. However, wisdom teeth are a common cause of pain for many people and unfortunately, trying to ignore that pain won’t help. Once a wisdom tooth has impacted (has no room to erupt normally) the only long term solution is extraction.

Early Detection is Key

During you regular checkups, our dentists will occasionally perform x-rays to keep an eye on wisdom teeth eruption. Hopefully there is no issue, but occasionally we’ll be able to predict if a wisdom tooth is growing at an angle or will become impacted due to lack of available space. Early detection is vital to avoid pain and other complications down the track.

Extracting wisdom teeth from younger people is generally easier as the tooth is softer and roots not as deeply formed. Associated procedural risks, such as nerve or bone damage, are also reduced. However, whenever the time comes for wisdom teeth extraction, you can rest assured that the team at Dental101 are experienced and dedicated to give each patient the best care possible.
